- Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the National bird instead of the bald eagle
In a letter to his daughter, Franklin wrote, “For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.”
3. In the 1900’s San Francisco a dance was invented called the Turkey Trot danced to Ragtime music. You can see a clip here.
4. The typical 15 pound turkey is 70% white meat and 30% dark meat. White meat has fewer calories and less fat than dark meat.
5. Female turkeys don’t gobble. Turkeys of both sexes purr, whistle, cackle, and yelp, but only the males gobble.
Whether you deep fry, bake or serve turducken, thanksgiving isn’t the same without the turkey! Hopefully, we’ve given you some fun trivia facts about turkeys, that you can share with the rest of the table. Just in case the facts don’t amaze… we leave you with this turkey joke!
